Bars and Cafes in Haarlem
Edit ThisThere is no lack of entertainment for travelers venturing to Haarlem. Bars and Cafes are a special part of attractions for visitors. The pubs here in Haarlem entertain travelers from far and near. The Haarlem brewers have a reputation for having some of Europe’s best tasting beers. It is interesting to note that Haarlem is the only city in Holland to have its own unique style of beer. In almost every bar or cafe you enter there is at least 1 of the 2 most remarkable brews served. These locally brewed beers are called Jopenbier and Koyt. They are especially tasty if you ask for a draught beer rather than a bottle. The majority of bars and cafes are located around the center of the city, which is commonly called the Grote Markt.
Bars and Cafes
Café Studio
This café is situated right in the heart of the main square. It is easy to locate because so many people hangout here. It is a nicely styled white 3-storey building which looks like something from the 1920s. It is recognized as the oldest café in the village that serves beer. This establishment serves both Jopenbier and Koyt on draught. Plus, it has about 50 other kinds of bottled beer. It is open from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. every day.
In Den Uiver
This interesting establishment is another well known place where folks come to have a few quality drinks. The interior looks to be quite older than what the 1905 building date set in the doorway arch states. The theme of pictures on the walls revolves around aviation. It could be said to be an eccentric café but they serve great beer. Mostly older folks gather here in the evenings.
Café Koops
This cafe could be easily passed by since it is a bland dark brick 3-story building with a small sign out in front. Still the noise of many people gathering here could be a clue as to what kind of establishment it is. Outside on the front patio are a few tables for patrons. Inside, the walls are like most cafes--made of timber. But this café has mustard yellow walls, giving it quite a stirring effect. This place serves as a specialty Haarlem Jopenbier on draught.
Café 1900
A favorite among the younger folks, this café has a lesser choice of beers than most cafes, primarily because Heineken is the beer sold here. Even s, the vibrant atmosphere makes up for any lack of beer selection. The interior is like any other 1920 timber-lined building but it is clean and has several brass and glass features throughout the interior that give it some style.
Most of the pubs of Haarlem are located on or near the Grote Markt, in the center of town. A few of the ones on the Grote Markt have terraces where you can sit outside and enjoy the sight of the St. Bavo, the old city hall and the people walking by.

De blauwe druif
Edit ThisProeflokaal de Blauwe Druif
In former days the inhabitants of Haarlem did not have shops to buy liquor, as a supermarket or licensed victualler's shop, in these days you went to a so called "proeflokaal". Here people could taste (the Dutch word is proeven or proef) the liquor or wine they wanted to buy.
Nowadays these locals are pubs, while the interior is still the same as 100 years ago. Here people meet from all ranks, the business men, the carpenter and even the local politicians. You can drink a beer or whatever you like and talk the day away. The Proeflokaal De Blauwe Druif is the most famous more..
