Shopping in Groningen
Edit ThisGroningen Shopping is an experience which is both exciting and fun without being tiring. The best thing about shopping in Groningen is that all the businesses are within walking distance of each other.
What is Groningen famous for? Antiques, fashion and design, books and jewelry are some of the things which Groningen is known for and you definitely need to take some of the items back with you.
Jewelry, Books and AntiquesIf it is jewelry that you love, take a detour onto Oosterstraat. This street has some fashion shops there as well. The bookstores are on Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat. It is not just the most recent books that you will find there, but many antique books are also available here in a few stores. Apart from antique books, regular antiques are available on Zuiderdiep as well. Shopping in Groningen would not be complete without a visit to Maupertuus where you will find the latest designs in furniture. It, too, has some good book stores.
MarketsUnder no circumstance should you miss the markets which take place every day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Almost everything is available in these markets. Bazaar Nas & Mazzel has delicacies and items from around the world. Grote Markt and Vismarkt have flowers, fish, fruits and other goods. On most days the market closes at 5 p.m. The exceptions are Thursday where it stays open till 9 p.m. and Sunday where it stays open till 7 p.m.
Fashion and DesignIf you are a fashion buff, you must definitely start with Herestraat but then take a walk through Zwanestraat as well. Folkingestraat is also known for opportunities to make unusual purchases, so keep your eyes and ears wide open. Fashion and design in Groningen can take up an entire shopping day, since Groningen is definitely on the cutting edge.
Some of the Shops to VisitH. de Boer Antiques is the place to go if you like antiques and art. It has a very good collection and is very well known. Athena's Boekwinkel is famous for books on literature and art and will have some antique books as well. ‘T Oortje is one place where you can get good jewelry. The more adventurous can even have ear- or nose-piercing done there, too. You need to visit B'Rooche for modern furniture.
===================================================
One of the most interesting shopping streets is the Folkingestraat, which leads straight from the train station over the Museum Bridge to the Vismarkt. Before 1945 this used to be the centre of the jewish shops. Nowadays you find art galleries and some arabic shops.
