Getting There in Groningen

Find the Best Way to Get to Groningen

This University town is not directly accessible by plane, so here are some tips on how to reach Groningen. Getting there is mostly through land travel whether by bus, train or car. Obviously, a train would give you a faster option, but when you want a relaxed vacation with plenty of sights in between, try renting a car or ridind the bus.

By Train

This is by far the easiest way to get to and around Groningen. The town has three stations: Station Groningen, Europark and Noord. The most central station is Station Groningen, and it is where most of the major and minor train destinations are available. The other stations have fewer options. You can take a train from Rotterdam, Utrecht and even Schiphol Airport.

By Bus or Car

Next to Station Groningen, Bremen and Uldenberg both have direct bus links to Groningen. For a more relaxed and hassle-free atmosphere, it is best to take a car to Groningen. From there, be careful of the old city’s traffic especially at the canal ring and Grote Markt. Do not assume your hotel or hostel will have a parking space since Groningen does not have designated parking spaces. Many spaces are expensive once you find them. You will have to go east of the city to find plenty of Park and Ride facilities.

The most convenient way of getting in Groningen is by train. There is a direct train connection from and to Schiphol Amsterdam Airport. Traveling from Amsterdam tot Groningen takes over 2 hours.

The closest airport is 'Groningen Vliegveld Eelde', which is 14 km to the south of the city. Only planes from and to a limited amount of destinations.

By car: 2 hours from Amsterdam. Just follow the A28 highway from Amsterdam, through the polder.
