Penny Pinching and Enjoying in Groningen

This popular university town in the Netherlands is apt for Groningen budget travel. The city has deep connections with its past, apparent in the different well-maintained medieval buildings in the area. It is also a busy town, as it houses not only residents but students from all over the Netherlands throughout the year. Groningen is a fun place to visit even with minimal budget.

Use a Bike

Considering this is the Netherlands, a bike is probably the most popular and convenient transportation in the city. Most of the residents use a bike and even tourists which can be rented from many areas in the city including their Central Station. The center is only about 20 minutes by bike. Using pedals is not only economically friendly but practical as well. Most of the streets in Groningen have strict pedestrian rules and obstruct drivers from entering to avoid mishaps. Just make sure you keep an extra eye on the rented bike, as there are a lot of opportunists who are expert bike thieves. Park in a safe designated area and, if possible, purchase two locks.

Do Not Take a Guided Canal Cruise

While it is tempting and certainly convenient to take a canal cruise, this may be expensive, especially with the more reliable lines. Even local boats take advantage of tourists and make them pay a large amount for a tour around Groningen’s canal. A better option would be to rent a ride, perhaps a canoe as there are several available in the center, and explore the waters yourself.
