Most of the activities in Geithoorn are closely related to exploring
the unusual landscape of the area. A great way to do this is to take a
bike trip through the city and surrounding countryside. Pass by the
canals and lake to find the tiny village of Geithoorn and continue on to
see beautiful ponds, wildlife and the straw roof houses that are dotted
throughout the countryside. Stop at a local bar and enjoy a nice cold
beer to finish your journey.
There is also the option to rent a
boat on your trip to Geithoorn. Explore the local lake and spend an
afternoon on the water to get a feel for the slow life here in
Geithoorn. If you don't want to man the boat yourself, there are a
couple boat tour options that will take you on a tour of the canals
throughout the city complete with history and commentary throughout.
Explore Histo-Mobil for a look at some great old cars and
motorcycles. This small museum is open daily between March 1 and October
31 and provides a nice look at the car and its historical uses in
Geithoorn.
The Museum 't Old Maat Uus is also a nice place to
stop and learn some local history, including how the inhabitants of
Geithoorn have lived for the last 100 years. Open from April to October,
this is a great living history museum complete with a renovated farm
and team of volunteers working on it and guiding guests through the
history of the area.
The Museum de Oude Aarde is a nice family friendly museum with gemstones and fossils for viewing and exploration. The adjoining store sells many minerals that make great souvenirs of your trip to the area. This museum makes a great stop on a bike ride or afternoon stroll through the city.
