1. Castle of Breda
This is one of the most important attractions in Breda that tourists must visit. Built in the 12th century, the castle has been redecorated and remodeled numerous times throughout the centuries. It is one of the city’s most important landmarks, and was previously used for military purposes. Today it is used as a Royal Military Academy. Tourists can opt for a group tour of this historically important landmark or simply visit it by themselves.
2. Breda Museum
Visiting the city’s main museum is a must for tourists. Established in the 19th century, the Breda Museum showcases some of the most exciting episodes in the history of the city. Located at Chassepark, the museum displays a wide range of the city’s history, art and culture. The Breda Museum occasionally holds local exhibitions as well, and tourists can also find separate sections dedicated to art, science and a new section devoted to children. The museum has a café where visitors can rest for a while or catch a quick bite.
3. Grote Kerk
Another must do for tourists in Breda is visiting the Grote Kerk, also known as the Church of Our Lady. This is an impressive Gothic structure that dates way back to the 15th century. Located in Kerkplein 2 next to the Grote Markt, the church’s spire measures about 100 meters, and can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. Excellent architecture, high vaulted ceilings, and beautiful paintings, sculptures, historic graves, and murals are some of the things that make this church worth visiting. Tourists who want a more detailed explanation of the Grote Kerk can take a guided tour, which costs about $3-4.
4. Spanjaardsgat
Built by the Spanish about 400 years ago, this is another attraction in Breda tourists must visit. This watergate, also known as Hole of the Spaniards, leads to the Breda Castle. Legend says that the hole was made for Dutch troops to enter the castle and liberate it from the Spanish. But this isn’t true, as records state that the gate wasn’t present at that time. Other records state that the gate was built on orders of Count Hendrik III in order to improve the drainage of the castle’s moats.
5. Beguinage
Tourists should also make it a point to visit Beguinage. Built in the 18th century, this small charming place was the residence of maidens who wanted to be dedicated to God and lead a simple life. The retreat, which is quiet and soothing, served the purpose of isolating its residents from the outside world. The place has its own church and a herb garden. Tourists are advised not to treat it as a museum, as beguines still live here.
