Visit Grote Kerk- The Great Church
Grote Kerk is one of the most beautiful churches in Europe, so your journey to Breda wouldn’t be complete without exploring this magnificent structure. It is situated right in the heart of Breda, and you can enjoy a magnificent view of the city from the church tower. This is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. A guided tour around the Grote Kerk will give you the opportunity to enjoy its rich architectural design, beautiful murals, monument and vaults. The church also houses the Prince Chapel, where the ancestors of the royal family are buried.
Explore Breda Castle
The Breda Castle is located just minutes away from the central park, right in the center of Breda. This wonderful 12th-century fortress was built by traders and farmers, and was later transformed into a residential castle by Hendrik III van Nassau. The castle later became the property of the royal family and served as a castle. The Breda Castle now serves as the Dutch Military Academy. During the "Noord Brabant open castle day," the castle is opened for public viewing.
Meet the Single Ladies in Begijnhof
Begijnhof is a quite little place situated in the heart of Breda. Here you can find the first ever convent church and the Beguinage of Breda. Beguinage is a settlement house for single ladies called "Beguines," or nuns, who devote themselves to the Lord. The Beguinage houses the Begijnhof Breda Museum, which showcases the life and history of the Beguines. There is a guided tour in Begijnhof where you will be able to see the beautiful herb garden, the life-size bronze statue of two Beguines, the Walloon church, and the miniature collection of Tine Merkx.
Breda Museum
There are few museums in Breda; however, the Breda Museum is the most popular of all. A simple tour here will make your vacation memorable. You will be able to see art depicting the history, traditions and culture of Breda. The museum also showcases great works of art from popular local artists. The Breda Museum is located on the corner of Chassé Barracks.
Noord Brabant Prince Carnival
This is a 4-day celebration that takes place 40 days before Easter. During the Noord Brabant Prince Carnival there are parades and street parties. The parade where the Prince of the carnival and his Raad van Elf (council of eleven), parade all over the town together with more than 94 different teams is a must-see.
