Since the city of Apeldoorn and the surrounding area only reaches around one hundred sixty thousand in population, it makes Apeldoorn just the right size to have a decent amount of activities to do without it being over crowded.
Travel Times
If you want the temperature to be real comfortable when traveling, then the summer months are the best time to travel here in Apeldoorn. From May to August, the temperature is in the high 70's and goes up to about the middle to high 80's. It is also happens to be when the most rain falls during the year. The winter months can get to average just above freezing.This is primarily why most of the festivals are held during the pleasant weather months.
Travel
Primarily, most travelers take airline flights into the major cities like Amsterdam or Rotterdam, then take a train into Apeldoorn. If you prefer traveling in a vehicle, they can be rented also. But, to really get a feel of the countryside, a train is recommended. From Amsterdam, the train runs every thirty minutes from 5am until midnight at a cost of 13.70 euros for 2nd class or 23.30 euros for 1st class for a one way trip. Private and public buses also run from the cities surrounding Apeldoorn.
Transportation
Once here in Apeldoorn, you have the option once again to choose what manner of transportation suites you. The city has a very helpful bus system that can get you anywhere you need to go in the city proper or out from the inner city. You may even like to travel like most Dutch citizens and ride a bike to get around. Cycling is great if you are on a tight budget, and bikes can be rented from bike shops all over the city.
Activities and Events
Since Apeldoorn is in the center of the Veluwe, which is the tourist area of the Netherlands, there are a number of places to visit and to go sight-seeing. One of the most prominent is the Het Loo. It is a huge palace which was the summer residence of the Dutch royal family since around the 1600's. Another favorite is the Veluwesche Stoormtrein Maatschappij, a steam train that leaves out of Apeldoorn going to Dierden. It stops at a train depot that has a steam train museum filed with all kinds of train parts and a lot of steam train history in books, paintings and models.
Apeldoorn has a lot to offer to every type of traveler. There is so much to explore and enjoy in this city that you will always have something to do. One of the best aspects of traveling here is that it can be done even if you are on a tight budget.
