Sights in Apeldoorn
Edit ThisIn recent years this Netherlands city has become a traveling center to tourists and one specific reason for it can be attributed to the Apeldoorn Sights that abound here. This was a favorite area of the Gelderland province for the Royal Dutch family. You can go and view a palace or stroll through one of the country's most famous zoos. Several days can be spent going sightseeing through the romantic woodlands and you can do this using different modes of travel. A trip to this city is great for those who want to sit back and relax and take in a few days of the sights that show off the Dutch heritage here in Apeldoorn.
Palace Het LooThis magnificently constructed building is still in the same shape as when it was created in 1686. The palace was primarily used as a summer residence for the Royal Dutch family. This palace is the only royal residence in all of the Netherlands that allows the public access to see the inside of the building or its surrounding grounds. On a tour of the opulent palace you can venture into 32 rooms, all of which really bring out the unique lifestyles and culture of the Dutch Royalty. During the summer months is considered the best time to visit because the grounds are in bloom and extra added areas of the palace are only open during that time.
Man with Two HatsThis important monument was established May 2, 2002 by Princess Margrit to commemorate two major events. On May 4 every year the Dutch citizens reflect on the people who died during World War II. It is a solemn day and great reverence is given for those who passed away. On May 5, the people celebrate their freedom from the Germans. The statute is a tribute to the Canadian men who gave their lives to secure this freedom for the Dutch. There is another monument just like it in Ottowa, Canada, that shows the Dutch peoples' gratitude. The monument was designed by Mark Visch.
Veluwsche Stoomtrein MaatschappijOne exciting way to spend a day here is to go out to the steam train engine depot. The main station, Beekberges, is located just outside of Apeldoorn and you can arrive there by bicycle or car quite easily. The main station includes a large depot with a museum. The museum has all sort of railroad relics such as models of former locomotives, important operators portraits and pictures and parts of steam trains plus a brief history of steam trains. The steam train runs from Apeldoorn to Dieran and back.
City ParksA great time of sightseeing is to go on a tour of the five beautiful city parks that Apeldoorn has. Oranjepark is the oldest park in the city having been opened in 1876. Just across the street is the Prins Hendrikplein which happens to be the smallest in the city. Just a short distance from that you come across three of the other parks named the Wilhelminapark, Prinsenpark and Verzetstrijderspark.
De NaaldThis is a monument that was presented by the citizens of Apeldoorn to Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik who were married on March 9, 1901. It was the mayor's idea at the time for which he though to give respect to their new rulers. It stands 17 meters high and is formed in the shape of an Egyptian obelisk.
Stichting Apenheul
Edit ThisApenheul Primate Park is one of the nicest zoos in the world. Hundreds of primates - 35 species of monkeys, apes and lemurs - live in great freedom in the forest at Apeldoorn (near National Park de Hoge Veluwe). Most of the animals are free roaming and can mingle with the visitors. One of the worlds largest gorillatroops (currently 18) live on a large wooded island. Also we house a group of bonobo's and many other interesting primate species (golden lion tamarins, yellowbreasted capuchins, woolly monkeys, spider monkeys etc etc).

Paleis Het Loo
Edit ThisHet Loo Palace, in the woodland setting of Apeldoorn in the heart of the Netherlands, was the favourite summer residence of the Stadholders and Royal Family of the Netherlands from 1686 to 1975. Shortly before he was to ascend to the throne of England Scotland and Ireland, William III commissioned the construction of a new palace next to the Medieval castle of the "Old Loo". The newly build palace was designed in 1685 by Daniel Marot. Though it’s much smaller, it reminds one to the Versailles palace, to which it was a deliberate reference. The gardens were however according more..
