Museums in Amsterdam
Edit ThisSince 1985 when the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum opened in Amsterdam, well over a million interested visitors have viewed this permanent exhibition. Located at 148 Oudezijds Achterburgwal, in the heart of the Green Light District, the Hash Marihuana Museum continues to inform and educate visitors from all around the world. Each year, some 80.000 people visit this exceptional centre for cannabis related culture and knowledge. The museum is completely dedicated to the cannabis plant and its many uses. The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum is unique in the world, and is a voyage of discovery that fits perfectly into any tour of Amsterdam.
The scent of genuine cannabis plants welcomes visitors the moment they enter the museum. Inside, the many aspects of hemp are fully explained. For instance, a photo collection shows how Afghani hashish is made in the traditional fashion.
(In the Middle East, hash has been a stimulant for centuries). There is a large collection of traditional pipes and smoking devices from all over the world. A collection of photos, posters, and magazines documents the progress of modern cannabis culture, from the 19th century to the Jazz era and on to our contemporary pop culture.
The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum offer visitor’s extensive documentation and a wealth of historical facts on today’s use of the cannabis plant as well as information on its medicinal, religious and cultural applications. In addition attention is given to the importance of cannabis to the environment, agriculture and industry.
The museum shows that hemp has evolved to reclaim its place as one of the Man’s most valuable raw materials.
Cannabis plants in their different stages of development can be admired in the indoor hydroponic garden. Our souvenir shop offers a wide variety of hemp-based articles for visitors to remember their visit to the museum.
Because cannabis is considered controversial in many parts of the world the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum aims to provide an objective picture of this remarkable plant. At the museum, visitors will be able to gain a deeper insight into this controversy, as a visit will bring a wealth of information not always available in the mainstream media. In the Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum, the past, present and future of the cannabis plant are merging together.

This is the number one museum in the city. Located in a majestic 1885 building designed by Pierre Cuypers who also designed the Stadsschouwburg and the Central Station.
Why is the Rijksmuseum the number one museum in Amsterdam (in the Netherlands)? For one, this is where Rembrandts most famous work, the Nightwatch, is displayed along with a lot of other Rembrandt pictures. But the other 17th masters are also present. Vermeers milkmaid can be found here along with pictures by Jan Steen, Frans Hals and Breughel.
Van Gogh? No, although the museum has a couple of van Goghs in more..

During the height of Nazi Occupation in Amsterdam, the Frank family made a bold decision not to flee the city, but instead to hide away in the secret annex of a building owned by the company of Otto Frank. Behind a movable bookcase lay a hidden stairway that led to the secret rooms where the Frank Family and others would remain for nearly 3 years. The time in captivity inspired the youngest daughter, Anne, to write her remarkable diary which is now read all over the world.

Van Gogh Museum
Edit ThisThis is one the most popular museums in Amsterdam and not for nothing. It really is a nice museum. The paintings tell the story of Van Goghs tragic life, from his start in the Netherlands to his brilliant time in France.
The Van Gogh Museum first opened its doors in 1973. The building, designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld, houses the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh: some 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 letters, as well as the artist's own collection of Japanese prints.
The collection originally belonged to Theo van Gogh (1857-1891), more..

Rembrandt House
Edit ThisThe 17th century house in which Rembrandt lived and worked from 1639 till 1658 is today still to be found in the Jodenbreestraat in Amsterdam. The house in which his son titus was born and his wife Saskia prematurely died is also the place where he painted and made his prints. In 1911 Rembrandt's house became a museum and it now owns and houses almost all of Rembrandt's etchings ( 250 in total). It is unique to see these exhibited in the very same surroundings in which they where created. Also to be found in the museum are a small number of his drawings as well as paintings by more..

Renzo Piano built this great green building right on the entrance of the IJ-tunnel (near the Central Station) to house a museum for technology. Most people see just the bow-like form of the building, but is can also be conceived as a theater. The city side of the building is one giant staircase which is wheel chair accessible. On a sunny day this is the perfect place for a picknick.
Open every day from 10am to 5pm. Closed on Monday (except during national school holidays), on Christmas day, on 1st January and on Queen's day (30th April)

This is a bit of a rip off. They display different things from the history of Ajax but you have to be a big fan to think it's worth any money and time. The stadium itself is quite nice though.
Visitor Comment: "The Stadium is impressive, but the museum is just for real fans. I thought it was a rip-off." - Sigourney
