This is the one for culinairy enthousiasts. Chef Mattijs Koornneef performs magic in this small restaurant in the heart of the Jordan quarter. They have a small a la carte selection and a daily 3-course meal with seasonal ingredients. The a la carte menu is good but if you want the real feast, let Mattijs decide what he'll cook for you.

The former Exchange of Amsterdam, the monumental "Beurs van Berlage", nowadays is a prestigous center for culture, conferences and events.

It also houses a very pretty Café, in the former Main entrance, at the southside of the building. The Café offers good lunches, pastry and italian branded coffies and cappuccino. Three impressive mosaics by Art Nouveau artist Jan Toorop dominate the room.

Café Stof

A local friend of us recommanded that we went out of the city centre to a hip and trendy area called 'de Pijp'. Indeed the neighbourhood was packed with locals.

Our friend send us to a restaurant called café Stof. A typical cosy Dutch restaurant. They diddn't have an English menu, but the waiter was more then willing to help us with the translation.

The food was great! International cuisine, with some Dutch dishes. I went for the (extremely tasty) Croatian ground meat as a starter and the fabulous veal as a main couse.

An Ethiopian restaurant. It is located a bit out of the city-centre on the Amstelveense weg, near the southern exit of the Vondelpark. This means that it is an option if you are 'doing' the Vondelpark.

Da Damiano

Just north of the Vondelpark (about half way), you will find this gem of a restaurant. The entourage may be a bit kitsch, but the food and the typical Italian service more than make up for it. The waiters asume that you will speak Italian and will start in Italian, then they will try Dutch, but they also speak English. Apart from the usual stuff you get in an Italian restaurant (pizza's, pasta's) they also have some specific plates from Sardinia where the owner probably was born. This restaurant features traditional Dutch home cooking. You won't find pancakes, but the menu features other dutch specialities: mosselen (mussels),  stamppot (stew, without a lot of gravy), and dutch beefsteak, which is naturally a little salty due to the cattle's below sea level grass source. The steak I had was at least 10 ounces and cooked to order. In May 2005 I had stamppot with a strong lager (krachtlager) and some salad...the total cost was about 8.5 Euros.  I've eaten here several times and I always bring friends if possible. Abyssinia

Make sure you make a reservation when you want to enjoy one of the Ethiopian or Eritrean dishes in this charming little restaurant. Great staff, good prices, don't forget to wash your hands and do take an African beer (served in a wooden bowl with a slice of lemon) instead of your usual Heineken.
