Drugs in Amsterdam
Edit ThisIn the Netherlands there’s a distinction made between so-called soft drugs and hard drugs. Hard drugs are Cocaine and Heroin, LSD, Ecstasy etc., soft drugs are basically marijuana, hash and mushrooms. While possession and use of the hard drugs maybe tolerated compared to the U.S. they are quite illegal and not condoned socially or by the police. Don't be the tourist arrested for buying illegal drugs on the street. Even with the soft drugs there are strict rules concerning possession and marketing.
Buying drugs on the street is about the biggest tourist trap in Amsterdam. From the first step out of the central station you will be offered drugs. Most of the time these offers will be in the form of a sort of whisper as you walk by a street dealer. They will say under their breath, "ecstasy - cocaine." Simply keep walking or shake you head from side to side. No reason to even speak. Whatever you do don’t buy it, the stuff you get offered can contain anything from vitamin C to washing powder or rat poison. Also often the customer gets robbed or harassed. Again, don't buy drugs on the streets, there are other places where it's safer to buy.
If you’re 18 or older you can visit a coffee shop, or in the case of mushrooms a "smartshop" to buy a small amount of soft drugs for your own personal use (you may buy max 5 grams, and you may posses 30 grams max). You’re not allowed to enter if you’re under aged. Here, the people behind the bar can give you advice and answer your questions. Don’t feel ashamed to ask them. Here you can also experiment a little. Most people aren't offended by smoking
, but you should be reasonable when smoking. This means that unless you are in a coffee shop, ask before you light up. When you are in a public place, especially where there are older people and / or children, leave it out.
Drugs consumption is not without risk. If you’re feeling sick after eating space cake or smoking, drink lots of water with sugar. Something sweet will straighten you out in most cases. Be very careful mixing drugs with other drugs like alcohol.
Most coffee shops are easily recognized by their green leaf symbols or anything reggae-like, or by their name like the Rookies, De Dampkring or The Grasshopper or the oldest, most mainstream and most oriented at tourist Bulldog shops, of which there are many. Apart from all the exotic Marihuana combinations, there is quite a lot of homegrown stuff around, or like the locals call it: 'Nederwiet'. The combination of drug tolerance and a strong tradition in plant improvement have led to some very strong versions of Marijuana.
The same goes for Smartshops. They say just that on their windows or street signs. Ask the people behind the counter how strong or what are the effects of the different varieties of their products. Remember, just because they are organic doesn't mean mushrooms are not powerful psycho-active drugs.
There are a multitude of websites by shop owners or tourists guides that can help you locate safe coffeeshops and smartshops. It is not a bad idea to check them out and if it is your first time in the Netherlands.
De Dampkring
Edit ThisDe Dampkring

De Dampkring is really a sight to see. If you’re not sure you want to smoke, and just want to observe a coffee shop form inside, this is one of the most interesting places to go to, though far from average. Painted in bright colors and overall sculptured, you easily get the impression you’ve left Amsterdam for more oriental regions.
If you enter this place, you might think you'd smoked enough, with all the different colors and the Ali-Baba look of it. Dampkring means atmosphere, but also something like smokers cirkel.
They won the 1997 Canabis Cup, so if you like more..

De Tweede Kamer
Edit ThisTweede Kamer is one of forerunners in the scene. Some years ago they opened De Dampkring, which is more widely known. Bigger doesn't really mean better, they sell the same stuff, but the Tweede Kamer is more intimate and more in crowd.
De Tweede Kamer, in Dutch, means something like second room, but by some strange coincidence ;-) this is also the name of the Dutch parliament. It is a really nice joint, not dark and obscure, but more like a snall grandcafe in a sort of alternative fashion. When it's warm you can also sit on one of the benches on the Spui.

Edit ThisLittle and cosy, with an excelent selection of different kinds, available pre-rolled. They sell also seeds, if you want to try something at home (but be sure to realize any legal consequences).
This place is highly recommended for the good quality grass, excellent tunes and friendly & knowledgeable staff.

Amnesia Dreams
Edit Thisphoto by: Tornike (Geo)
This is the best stuff you can get in Amsterdam. Only natural stuff, no chemicals. One of the best is the Amnesia Dreams, the namesake of the shop. It is located at Herengracht 133, which is in the area of the Anne Frank House.

The Rookies
Edit ThisThe Rookies, close to the Leidseplein, is a perfect mixture between a
coffeeshop and a bar. Here you can just sit on the terrace, shoot some
pool if you feel like it or smoke some marijuana and have some coffee or other drinks on offer..As of April 1st 2007 coffeeshops are no longer allowed to sell alcohol..So if you fancy a drink with your smoke just go to the Rookies bar directly across the street.

Anyday
Edit ThisA wonderful coffee shop just minutes away from Central Station. The vaporisers are the best in the city. And the herbs are way up there.
The upstairs at Anyday is now open. It provides a relaxed atmosphere to relax with your traveling companions.

Jolly Joker
Edit ThisWhat to say, another favourite haunt. peaceful atmosphere, excellent viewpoint for people watching while stoned.
Beware though, the spiral staircase may seem easy to navigate while sober, but take care while descending after partaking of their marvellous weed.
Very friendly staff.
Was fortunate to witness the amazing first aid skills of a fine looking barmaid when she rushed outside to help someone who had collapsed due to too much weed. She filled a glass full of sugarey water and rushed to the guys rescue, within minutes, he had recovered and was on his more..

De Grasshopper
Edit ThisDon't go here to meet the locals. This is definitely a tourist place, so if you are a seasoned stoner you probably won`t like it. On the other hand, they're very much used to tourists, so you might feel more comfortable here than in one the smaller hidden away establishments.

Abraxas Cofee Shop

Do not miss this spot! You may have noticed (how could you miss it?) that there seems to be 2 types of coffeeshops - those that are opened strictly to make money and those that are born out of their owners desire to create a truly wonderful environment in which to 'travel'! ABRAXAS coffeeshop is one of the latter. What could be more enticing than a comfortable, well-lit, space in which most (if not all!) of your senses are stimulated? Music, art, furniture, overall ambience, and of course some solid ganja to bring it all together. The owners of this place (I don't know them) have more..

Greenhouse Tolstraat
Edit ThisThis is one of the best if not the best in ADam. In the "old south" lower part of the city, it has the best atmosphere, best hashish, a full bar, a friendly helpful staff, and for my money the best ambience of all coffee shops. I went to many of the others listed as well, but this is always my favorite. Much mellower than Grey Area, and the dope is just as good.

Edit ThisThe rokerij (smokery translated but sounds a bit naf) has a few "outlets" theres a smaller one on the elandsgracht that has a reallt cool inetrior. Their chai tea is good too. These guys have great taste and all the shops are cool. The one on the leidsestraat has a cool huge conversation pit with cushions Moroccan style, its a real young busy crown tho i find.
