Budget Travel Ideas in Amsterdam
Edit ThisAmsterdam is a large and scenic city in the Netherlands. The city is well known for many things, especially the abundance of art, museums, and the lax laws on many things that would be considered illegal elsewhere. This is not a city of mischief, though. Amsterdam operates like a well-oiled machine with streets lined with antique buildings unique to the Netherlands.
Getting There
KLM (also Northwest Airlines), Lufthansa and Scandinavian Airlines all have excellent prices to Amsterdam, though you can find better deals with these same airlines via a multi-airline search engine. KLM Royal is a Dutch airline, so check out their website for special deals to the Netherlands and discounts on accommodation. Remember that flying during holidays will be more expensive and to avoid it if possible. Also flying out mid-week will usually save you money, as will checking out other European destinations that have cheap flights (London, Paris, etc.).
What to Do
For around $55 you can get an I Amsterdam Card that lasts for 24 hours. They are also available for 48 hours ($70) and 72 hours ($84). This card will give you free admission for over 30 sites, including world famous museums like the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. You will also get discounts and/or free drinks at over 20 shops and a free canal cruise. You will also get free public transportation (excluding taxis) while your card is still valid.
Where to Stay
Many hostels are very cheap in Amsterdam since there are so many travelers seeking accommodation. Starting at only $13 per person per night in a 10-bed dorm room, you can stay at Hostel Linda City Center. There is no curfew so you can stay out however late you want, and there is wireless internet access in every room. At the Hostel Orfeo you will get a free breakfast every morning and free internet access. It is located in the city center where you will find bars, cafes and many of the sites you'd want to visit. Prices start at around $21 per person per room in a dorm room (4-6 beds).
