There are several Amersfoort must do’s in this attractive town found in the Netherlands. This town is the cultural center of the Eem Valley, and several streams all converge to create the Eem River. This is an old town, and many of the residents commute to Amsterdam or Utrecht for work.

1. See the Monument to the Belgians

The Belgian Monument is located on Amerfoort Berg, which is just southwest of the town. This monument was built to commemorate the Belgian refugees that traveled to the town during the First World War. You can enjoy many gorgeous views of the surrounding area from the monument.

2. Uncover the Town’s History

The Old Town is the historic center, and is completely surrounded by two rings of canals. You can see the changing architectural styles by looking at how the walls and the towers differ. Some spots not to miss in this area include the Our Lady’s Tower and the Church of Saint Joriskerk, which was built during the Middle Ages. Inside the Monastery of Marienhof you can find a culinary museum, and the Cavalry Museum has exhibitions on the military history.

3. See Where the Artists Lived

Oude Haven is a popular area to visit, as this was once the merchant and artisan part of the city.  You can stop in and visit the old Salvation Army Building, which was built in 1664. There is a Beer Brewers’ Guild House where brewers were trained. If you want to learn more about brewing, then visit De Dtrie Ringen, as this is the only brewery still in the area. The little white houses that are next to the bridge were once a pub called the Little Church.

4. Visit The Birthplace of an Abstract Artist

Piet Mondriaanhuis was born in this house, known as Mondriaanhuis, on Korte Gracht.  He is a famous painter best known for his very colorful abstract paintings, the most famous of his work being "Composition in Red, Yellow and Blue." Today, this house is a museum that shows how Mondriaanhuis grew up. You can learn about some of his famous but unfinished work, and find out that he also painted some very typical-looking landscapes.

5. The City Gates

Amersfoort is an ancient medieval town, and there are three ancient city gates that you can visit: Monnikendam, Kamperbinnenpoort and Koppelpoort. Koppelpoort is the only gate that is mainly still used an as intake, and much care has gone into restoring this gate. It contains a land gate and a water gate. The water gate was used to regulate the level of the canal, but it was also defensive and could repel invaders.
