Amersfoort is one of the oldest cities of Holland and its origin dates back to as far as 10th century CE. Amersfoort Sights include historic structures, nice river valleys and some very modern city life in the new city. Amersfoort was fortified during the 13th century. The great city walls were built during that period to protect it from the attacks of Germania. The city economy boomed with the help of its cloth and beer industry. In recent years, Amersfoort is again seeing some rapid growth due to its locally cultivated tobacco industry. The city is situated on the very important Amsterdam-Berlin route and has always been of very high strategic importance. The old city is full of medieval structures and monuments to explore.

City Walls

The city walls were originally built to barricade the city way back in 13th century. The shape of the wall was transformed from round to polygonal later to defend the city against attacks with canons. The walls are still there, carrying the history of its glorious past and the engineering marvel the city had once seen. The development of the walls over the ages to defend against the modern weaponry stills bewilders historians today.

Havik

Havik used to be an inland harbor of Amersfoort in ancient times, so it was a very important place. The place still preserves some of the merchant quarters from the medieval period. You can relish the authentic Dutch lifestyle with a pint of beer here.

Muurhuizen

Amersfoort is the only city in all of Holland taking pride in muurhuizen, or wall houses. The old walls were destroyed during the 15th century, and new houses were erected along the wall line. Subsequently, new walls were developed on the same line, making these a beautiful blend of unique medieval architecture with modern engineering. The widely varying architectural styles of the houses, as well as the wall construction, is a must-see.

Onze Lieve Vrouwe Tower

The Amersfoort Cathedral was constructed during the 14th century, and Onze Lieve Vrouwe Tower was also built during that period. This tower is one of the highest towers in Holland. If you can climb the 364 steps leading to the top of the tower, then the vista of the sprawling city below from the top of the tower will leave an indelible impression in your mind.

Amersfoortse Kei

Amersfoortse Kei is a huge boulder standing as a true symbol of Amersfoort. This boulder, situated by the side of inner ring road, is near the city walls. The city receives and transmits boulders to other cities as tokens of love and gratitude. The boulders and small stones received from other places are also preserved here.

One of the most pleasant ways to discover Amersfoort is a walk along the old city walls. Large parts of this 16th century defense system are still intact, among which some unique city gates. The walls and towers display a very interesting and important period in wall development. When cannons came in use for warefare, the defense answer was to build polygonal towers in stead of round ones.

Traffic Light

Edit This

Across the street from city hall is the most famous traffic light of the Netherlands: the only traffic light that does not show a guy crossing the street but a proud woman! The riddle is that no-one knows who put it there. It was there one morning. The great thing is that the city government decided it could stay, and if you compare this traffic light with all the others, you must admit it looks a lot more inspiring.

All of the traffic lights in Amersfoort now show girls crossing and not males!
