Orheiul Vechi

Visit the ancient cave monastery of Orheiul Vechi which is located about 50 km from Chisinau. This is one of the most famous attractions in not just the city, but also the country. The drive to Orheiul Vechi is extremely beautiful with small attractive villages, vineyards and other Moldovan scenery. The cave monastery was dug in the 13th century by orthodox monks and till the 18th century it remained inhabited. The small chapel which was carved from rocks still serves as a church for the villages nearby. It has historic décor that is well preserved. There is also an open air museum that consists of a small archeological exposition within the territory.

Milestii Mici

One of the must visit places in Chisinau is Milestii Mici, which is considered as the largest wine cellar in the world. It is also known to have the largest collection of wines in Europe. Milestii Mici is located about 20 km to the south of the city. This winery has a wine city underground that is made from limestone. Due to this, the cellar stretches for around 250 km, but only 120 km is in use. National Arts Museum

Lovers of art should make it a point to visit the National Arts Museum, also known as Muzeul National de Arte Plastice. The museum was founded in 1939 and at that time contained a Pinacotheca collection. Soviet authorities reorganized this collection into the Republican Art Museum, but it was lost during WWII. After WWII, the museum was reopened and artworks from other Russian museum were transferred to this museum. Today the National Arts Museum displays over 33,000 pieces of western, national, Oriental and Eastern Europe artworks.

Chisinau Orthodox Cathedral

Tourists should also visit the Chisinau Orthodox Cathedral which is one of the oldest examples of Kishinev architecture. Located in the heart of the city, this cathedral is surrounded by a large park that spreads for about 9 hectares. Work on this structure began in 1830 and was completed 6 years later. The stunning belfry towards the southern side was damaged during the Soviet time (1962) and was only renewed by the end of the 80s. The building was then transformed into an exhibition hall and returned to church services in 1989. Close to the cathedral is the Triumph Arch that tourists can visit.
