History in Chisinau

The place has a lot of architecture and relics that remind both locals and tourists about the rich history of the city. Further, there are a lot of historic events that happened in Chisinau, which makes the city a great place for sightseeing tourists. Each historical event is marked by a great architectural structure which you will find all over the city.
Ottoman Rule
The Ottoman rule started in Chisinau during the early 1800’s. The first noted architecture that was built during this era is the Catedrala NaÅterea Domnului which, until now, is famous for its bell tower. This cathedral now stands in the heart of the oldest part of the city even if the Ottoman rule was driven away by the Russians during 1877.
World War I
After the invasion of Russia, the country stood up against the Russian empire and has declared independence after the downfall of the conquerors during World War I. After the World War I, Chisinau slowly began to rise from the downfall brought about by the war and in 1927, the Stephen the Great Monument was erected.
World War II
After a short-lived peace that began after World War I during 1940s, another war occurred which laid the entire Chisinau into smoking ruins. World War II completely destroyed the city. Moreover, the city was further devastated by the earthquake that happened on November 10, 1940. The five-year occupation of the Nazi during World War II cost a lot of lives and the entire city lost 70% of all its buildings. After the war, the city started to slowly rebuild its own city and soon after, the memorial complex called Eternity was constructed which is dedicated to the soldiers who fell during World War II.
Soviet Union
After the World War II, Chisinau went under the Soviet rule and the gradual reconstruction of the city started. During this time, a lot of Stalinist architecture was built. In fact, the museums and government buildings that are now frequented by tourists were built during the Soviet rule. Old housings that are numerous in Chisinau are also patterned after the Stalinist architecture.
