Struga Travel Guide

Struga, even a small town, is a charming and picturesque place to visit. It is 14 km away from Ohrid and 14 km from the Albanian border, 7 kilometers away from the ohrid Airport. Through the town flows the river of Crni Drim and its waters flow into the Ohrid lake. Some of the most beautiful lake beaches of Macedonia are located exactly near Struga. This town is a place where many important international cultural events are held, like Struga Poetry Evenings and Struga Musical Autumn. Its atmosphere and environment will make the visitors feel like coming back again and again, enjoying the sunny days at the Riviera from April until September, the good cuisine and the relaxing stay.

In this tourist region there are 65 tourist units where the accommodation can reach up to 16.298 visitors at a time. In the course of the year 60.000 tourists visit Struga, which is equivalent to 330.000 overnights. Since 1961 Struga is the host of an internationally known festival of poetry known as "Struga Poetry Evenings". The festival is held every year towards the end of August and is the world's largest event of this kind. The Struga Poetry Evenings and "the traveling of the eel" are the two main world attractions that Struga's inhabitants are proud of. From the other anthropogenic valuables, it is worth visiting the commemorative house of the Miladinov brothers, as well as the interesting attraction, the museum of Dr. Nikola Nezoblinski where the fauna of the Ohrid Lake is presented.

Struga is also the birthplace of the most eminent cultural activist Vojdan Chernodrinski. One of the more important cultural monuments is the church "St.George", whose effigies date from the 13 to 19 century. In another church, which has the same name, ("St.George") built in 1267, has been discovered a mosaic from 5th century. It is worth visiting the fishermen village Kalishta and the church St.Bogorodica there, built on the lake shores itself and the cave church St.Atanasij.
