The path to the Dead Dunes

The path to the Dead Dunes

There are lots of sights to see, especially for a nature lover, but the most-visited and the most breath-taking of them all is for sure the Great Dune aka Parnidis Dune.

A dune, more than 60 meters high seperates the Baltic Sea and the Curotian Lagoon.

This is where sand and wind cooperated and created one of the most beautiful and perfect places in the world. A lot of legends and real event happened in these dunes. Every grain of the sand in these dunes would tell a story if it could.

One such place, for example, is the Valley of Death. This valley is the place where year 1870 used to be a German camp where French prisoners of war used to be kept. And the name of the valley tells the rest of this story.

Also a very silent dip in the middle of the dunes -- Valley of Silence.

The best experience of the dunes is wandering them on foot. I like to do it barefoot.

Although, a visitor must know that not far from the dunes to the south is the Lithuanian border with the Kaliningradas District which is part of Russian Federation. Now it's EU outter border so be careful and don't go too far.

On the top of the dune there is a sun clock. Althought after a recent hurricane it has been smashed into bits.

Parnidis (translated from Lithuanian that means "near Nida") Dune is well visible from the town so you can't miss it.

Juodkrante: A Hill of Witches

One of the Sculptures

The main tourist attraction in the town of Juodkrante (the second biggest town in Neringa, the first town you will drive into if driving from Klaipeda) is of course the Hill of Witches.

A Hill of Witches (also sometimes called Jonas (John) Hill) is a tree-covered slope of the old parabolic dunes. In 1979 an exposition of wooden sculptures of ancient Lithuanian mithological creatures was opened on this hill. Nowadays it has become very popular. It's almost as much visited as the Parnidis Dune in Nida.

The exposition starts in the main street of Juodkrante and then you take more..
