The Curonian Spit is the peninsula dividing the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. The Northern part, which is the biggest part of the Curonian Spit, belongs to the Republic of Lithuania. The remaining part, which includes the settlements of Pilkopa, Rasytė, Šarkuva and several others, belongs to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. In 1923 the northern part of the Curonian Spit (the area of 52 km in length) was assigned to the Republic of Lithuania. From 1939 until 1945 the entire area of the Spit was occupied by Germany. The Northern part of the peninsula was given back to Lithuania after World War II. At present, the Lithuanian part of the Spit (800 ha) is administrated by Klaipeda City Municipality; whereas the remaining part (about 25,600 ha) is subordinate to the Municipality of Neringa City.

Area of the Spit- 180 sq.km, length - about 97 km.

Width of the beach area- about 10-50m.

The point at which the width reaches the maximum of 3,8 km is in the area of Bulvykis Cape (4 km North of Nida).

The narrowest point (380 metres) is in the settlement of Šarkuva, District of Karaliaučius..

The total amount of sand in the Curonian Spit reaches 2 km.

Forests cover the area of 6852ha, which is 70% of dry land.

The arable land makes 5 ha, pastures and meadows-17 ha, inland waters- 1ha, roads-232 ha, sands- 2485 ha, built-up areas-152 ha, swamps- 28 ha, gardens- 2ha.
