Curonian Spit

This is a thin long peninsula that formed about 5,000 years ago in the Baltic Sea. It happened through the course of time as sea sand deposited alongside the curve of the Baltic coast. The Curonian Spit has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the interaction between the landscape and humans that has gone on for decades. The spit was once a part of Prussia, but it became an independent part of Lithuania after Prussia was defeated in WWI. Today the Curonian Spit is divided between Lithuania and the Russian province of Kaliningrad.

Klaipeda Castle Museum

Located in Pilies gatve in the Old Town, the Klaipeda Castle Museum is another sight that tourists must visit. Here tourists will find the city’s old castle, which is protected by moats. Inside one of the castle’s remaining towers is the Castle Museum, which narrates Klaipeda’s history from the 13th to the 17th century. Some of the exhibits in this historical museum include Curonian apparels and arms, old housewares, a model of the city, and a golden ring that is embedded with precious stone. There are also dummies in the museum that display the way people lived in historic times. Klaipeda Castle Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Teatro Aikste

Located in the Old Town of Teatro Aikste, this is another place tourists must visit in Klaipeda. Some of the streets here have been repaired to show the German influence on this city. Tourists will find the classic Drama Theatre which was built in 1857 in this area. This theatre has significant historical importance, as it is from this balcony that Hitler declared incorporation of the city into Germany. In front of the theatre is a fountain that has been dedicated to the 17th century German poet Simon Dach, who was born in Klaipeda. In the middle of the water that flows from this fountain is a statue of Ann from Tharau, a famous character from an old German love song.

Sea Museum

This is one of the most remarkable museums in the country, located in Smiltyne, Klaipeda. There are 6 different exhibits in the Sea Museum that display fish from the Baltic Sea, fresh water species, and a variety of vertebrates as well. Visitors can also view marine fauna like shark trees, trilobite, and 50 different fossils, among many others. There is an outdoor pool where penguins, sea lions and seals usually put on shows for visitors. Visitors can even view sculptures of treacherous sea animals made by professionals. They are in their original sizes, and include light and sound effects to make them still seem real and dangerous.
