Sights in Klaipeda
Edit ThisAs one of the biggest cities in Lithuania, Klaipeda offers tourists a
number of Klaipeda sights that will give them an idea of
the city’s history and culture.
Sculpture Park
Located
at Liepu gatve near the Klaipeda station area is the Martynas Mazvydas
Sculpture Park. The park has been named after Martynas Mazvydas, who was
the first Lithuanian author to have his book published in 1547. During
the 18 th century, this area was used as a German cemetery.
The park has now been filled with sculptures since the 1970s. Today
visitors can find about 120 monuments by famous sculptors in this park.
The Sculpture Park holds an exhibition every year, where sculptors from
Lithuania and other countries display their work.
Old
City
To get a real feel for Klaipeda in historic times,
tourists must visit the Old City. This place features numerous
half-timbered buildings and a labyrinth of houses that visitors can
spend hours exploring. Although most of the houses have tiled roofs and
traditional architecture, there are elements of modern architecture in
them, too. The Old City has a theatre squire, where tourists can see the
Simon Dach fountain as well as a statue of Anika from Torava, a famous
personality from an old Lithuanian song.
Clock Museum
Another
interesting sight to visit in Klaipeda is the Clock Museum, which is
located in the New Town. Here visitors can view an exclusive and large
collection of different chronometers. There are many halls in the museum
displaying a range of clocks like the sun clock, water clock, fire
clock, and sand glass. Tourists visiting this Klaipeda sight during the
summer can also see Carillon concerts that are held on weekends in the
backyard of Clock Museum.
Mary Queen of Peace Church
Situated
on Rumpiskes gatve in the Old Town, work on this huge concrete church
began in 1957. As it was completed in 1960, the church was shut down by
Soviet authorities. Until 1988, the church was utilized as a concert
hall, but it was then re-consecrated, and for the first time, a mass was
celebrated there. The Mary Queen of Peace Church has a tower that
measures about 46.5 meters tall. This can provide visitors with a
spectacular view of the city of Klaipeda.
Sea Museum
If
you are visiting Klaipeda along with children or simply want a
different kind of sight to visit, the Sea Museum is a wonderful option.
Most of the displays in the Sea Museum include live exhibits of mammals,
fish and birds. The museum is divided into different sections,
including the Aquarium, Dolphinarium and Curonian Spit Nature Museum.
The Sea Museum is also an ideal attraction for those who love the sea
and ships. Tourists can examine different ship models and equipment from
various eras. Visitors can even observe several anchor constructions
and real vessels in the museum’s open area.
Lithuanian Sea Museum
Edit ThisThe Lithuanian Sea Museum is located in the northernmost point of the Curonian Spit (arrival only by ferry or boat to Smiltyne). The Museum houses aquariums with fish species from Lithuania's fresh waters, the Baltic Sea and tropic seas, as well as a permanent exposition of prepared samples of marine fauna. Penguins, Baltic Sea seals and Steller's Sea lions live in the outdoor pools next to the aquarium building. In the dolphinarium you can catch shows with dolphins and the Californian sea lions. There is also an exposition of the history of Lithuanian more..
