There are several Kaunas sights that tourists should not miss while in town. Although the city is home to seven universities and 35,000 of the population is made up of students, there is more to this city than meets the eye.

Vytautas Church

As one of the oldest church in Lithuania and the oldest in Kaunas, a visit to the Vytautas Church is a must. The church was constructed on the river bank of Neman River in the 1400s. This Gothic-styled church is also a good reference to the Brock Gothic architecture of Lithuania. Over the years after its construction, the church has gone through several renovations.

Lithuanian Zoo

As the only zoo in Lithuania, the Lithuanian Zoo in Kaunas is a very popular attraction for both locals and tourists. The zoo, formerly known as Kaunas Zoo, is home to over 2,800 insects and an assortment of animals including fish, reptiles, amphibian, birds, and reptiles.

Choral Synagogue

This memorial for the only Choral Synagogue in Kaunas was built to remember the 1,600 children killed in Ninth Fort. The Choral Synagogue is close to Laisves Aleja and can be found on the western banks of Neris.

Kaunas Botanical Gardens

The Kaunas Botanical Gardens is made up of 62 hectares of land, 517 meters of which are conservatories. This botanical garden was founded in 1923 together with the University of Lithuania. This multi-purpose garden not only preserves the local plants but it also showcases the local plant life as well as houses different research facilities.

This botanical garden is not just a venue for displaying different species of plant life. The botanical garden is also involved in different projects including the certification of private forests in Lithuania and the monitoring of the forest biodiversity and productivity of the country, to name a few.

Aside from the different displays visitors can see in the botanical garden, the Kaunas Botanical Garden also sells flowers, shrubs, and trees to the public.

Laisves Aleja

The Laisves Aleja is a very popular pedestrian street in Kaunas. Many visitors walk along this busy street that stretches along many popular destinations of the city. With a distance of 1.6 kilometers, the Laisves Aleja is the longest pedestrian street--not only in Lithuania--but in the entire Eastern Europe, as well.

Also referred to as the Freedom Avenue, this noticeable pedestrian street has two walkways separated by a median strip lined with linden trees. Walking along the Laisves Aleja will bring tourists to some of the main attractions in the city, including the Kaunas State Musical Theater and Kaunas State Drama Theater.
