Eating Out
Edit ThisVaduz is the capital city of the principality of Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein may be a small country, but the region is well versed in food and wine. Vaduz, being the capital, is home to Vaduz Castle where the prince resides. Residents of Vaduz typically start the day with “zmorga” or breakfast. The midday meal is “zmittag”; the most substantial meal of the day usually consists of a main dish, soup, salad and dessert while “znacht” is the lighter evening meal. Znacht may be an open-faced sandwich or soup.
Restaurant Torkel
Restaurant Torkel is in the middle of the Herawingert Vineyard, which belongs to the foundation of the Prince of Liechtenstein. “Torkel” means wine press so be sure to try one of their regional wines. The beautiful garden and terrace that surround the restaurant are breathtaking and the restaurant boasts many picture windows so diners feel as thought they are outside. The chef at the Torkel is known for his innovative freshwater fish cuisine. The restaurant also offers international fare, regional cuisine and buffets on the terrace. Check before you go as they also host champagne nights, an asparagus festival and live music.
Restaurant Engel-Ratskeller
Despite the name, Ratskeller actually means a tavern or pub below street level. This particular Ratskeller is at street level and more like a café but it does serve wine and beer. Try cheese fondue or one of their local dishes with sauerkraut. Stop by for breakfast and do as the locals and start your day with “zmorga”, a light breakfast of coffee and bread with jam.
Landgasthof Au
This restaurant looks like a quaint Swiss chateau from the outside. The price point is reasonable and the fare is local specialties like pork schnitzel, sauerkraut stew or “kasknofle” (homemade noodles baked with cheese and onion then served with applesauce or salad). Stir-fries are also offered along with game, fondues and traditional food. If the weather is nice, ask for a table on the terrace.
Gasthof Lowen
Gasthof Lowen is the oldest restaurant and hotel in Liechtenstein; no visit would be complete without a stop here. The inn and restaurant have a charming, old-world feel but both have all the amenities of the new. Stop by the English pub style piano bar for a light appetizer and cocktail or go straight to the restaurant for a delightful meal in an elegant setting. This establishment has an extensive wine list highlighting regional offerings. International cuisines and local dishes are cooked to perfection and the servers are knowledgeable and friendly.
