Economy in Verona

The population of Verona Province is 797.229 with 256.756 people residing in the provincial capital of Verona, itself (31 Dec. 1993). Recent data indicate that the working population numbers more than 326.000 employed in three principal areas: 184.000 in the service sector (commerce, tourism, banking, transport, etc.); 117.000 in industry and craftwork; 25.000 in agriculture.

Verona is one of the Italian provinces which have enjoyed a significant rise in the per capita income over the last decade (Data Unioncamere 1992) - reaching a gross provincial income of over 24.635 billion Lire (over 12.014 billion Lire in the private service sector, over 2.682 billion in the pubblic service, administration; over 8.268 billion in industry and crattwork; about 1.671 billion in agriculture, forestry and fishing). The export of the Verona province in 1993 - mostly toward EEC (in order of priority: Germany, France, Great Britain, Holland, Austria, USa, Spain, Switzerland) was over 6.421 billion Lire. The import in the same year amounted to 9.078 billion Lire. Verona serves as an important traffic nexus including: the Brenner and Serenissima motorways; connections with Port cities on the Adriatic- Tyrrhenian coasts; a vital railway junction linking Italy and the rest of Europe an international airport capable of handing both passenger and commercial traffic, one of the most important customs district in Northern Italy. Together with Rome, Milan, Florence, Bologna and Venice, Verona has become one of the major conference cities in Italy.
