Getting Around in Mestre

Edit This
Mestre transportation can easily connect you to Venice. Mestre is located on the mainland and is actually an extension of Venice. Hotel fares here tend to be less expensive than those on the Venetian lagoon. This makes it appealing to visitors on a budget. If you plan to spend time getting to know Mestre itself, expect to do some walking. Mestre is small and is made for pedestrians. The town also has bicycle paths that are in good shape and allow you to get around.

Buses

Freedom Bridge, or Ponte della Liberta, is a causeway that connects Mestre to Venice. Public buses from Mestre's center take you directly to Piazzale Roma, Venic'’s bus terminal. From there you can walk or use water transportation to get around the canals.

Trains

Taking the train from Venice-Mestre to the  Venice-Santa Lucia stop is only a 10 minute ride. The cost for a ticket is less than $2 US. Trains leave at various times during an hour. You can buy tickets at kiosks. If you purchase them on the train, the cost is a bit higher.

Taxis and Cars

Taxis can also take you into Venice proper. However, be aware that their rates are much higher than the aforementioned options. Call (39) 041-936222 to ask for a radio taxi. As far as car rentals go, it's easiest to arrange for one at the airport itself. While cars aren't of use if you want to go into Venice, they are a good choice for those who wish to explore towns adjacent to Mestre.
