Sights in La Spezia
Edit ThisThere are a number of La Spezia sights that tourists can visit
in the city, from churches and museums to castles and old towns.
Following are some La Spezia sights that tourists must visit when they
are in this Tuscan city.
Abbey Church of Santa Maria
Assunta
Built in the 13 th century, this is one of
the most beautiful sights in La Spezia. Although the architecture of the
Abbey Church of Santa Maria Assunta is not all that impressive on the
outside, it is the interiors that are completely stunning. The interiors
of the church include gold gilding that blends beautifully with the
natural light entering the church. Art lovers in particular should visit
this church, as it holds beautiful artwork. Some of the art pieces
belong to other suppressed religious organizations. These include
Giovanni Battista Casoni’s Multiplication of Bread and Andrea della
Robbia’s In-coronation of the Virgin.
Ubaldo Formentini
Located
at the St. George Castle, Ubaldo Formentini is the city’s Civic
Archeological Museum. It is the best place to visit for those who want
to learn more about La Spezia’s culture and history. The museum houses
numerous artifacts from the city that date back from prehistoric times
to the Middle Ages. The exhibits in the museum are spread out over two
floors. The lower floor includes archeological displays from the
Pleistocene time to the Roman era. On the upper floor, visitors can view
remains that have been preserved from the site of Luni.
Old
Town
Another sight tourists must visit in La Spezia is the
city’s old town or quarter. Here, visitors can witness the charming
history of the city. The old town still retains the narrow streets that
twist their way in the section. Walking through the town, visitors will
be able to see the old buildings and their architecture that has
stretched on for centuries. A significant feature of this town is the
traces of the Lombard era that can be seen almost everywhere.
Cristo
Re Dei Sicoli
If you are looking for excellent architecture,
make sure you visit the Cristo Re Dei Sicoli. It is also known as
Christ the King of Centuries cathedral. This is an old cathedral that
was designed and built in the 70s by Adelberto Libera as a special
project. As the cathedral is relatively new, it includes a different
kind of architecture and decorations. This makes it a worthy visit for
tourists in La Spezia.
Castle of San Giorgio
This
is probably the most important tourist sight in the city. Originally
built to use as a watch tower, the castle was renovated and extended in
the 13 th century. But, soon after the extension, the castle
was destroyed almost completely. In the 15 th century, new
fortifications were added to the castle and additional sections were
built in place of the destroyed building.
