Museums in La Spezia
Edit ThisVisiting La Spezia museums is the recommended way to explore the vast history of Italy. Among the many museums found in La Spezia, the Castle Museum is regarded as the best.
Castle Museum
This museum is also called the Civic Museum since it is a public museum. The name Castle Museum stems from the fact that it is located within the complex of the San Giorgio Castle. This museum has one of the largest collections of ancient Roman artifacts, some of which are regarded as national treasures by the Italian people.
The relics on display date back to the Copper Age and provide a peek into the life and evolution of early man. Some of these prehistoric remains date back to 4th century B.C. This collection is usually referred to as the Ubaldo Formentini collection.
The most popular items displayed as a part of this prehistoric collection includes funeral pyres and remnants of burial rituals. One part of the museum displays the Civic Archaeology Collections. This includes statues and other objects belonging to the early phase of the Roman Empire. Other popular item on display includes artwork belonging to the Fabbricotti family, along with epigraphy pieces and mosaics.
The museum also displays the official seals used during various periods of the Roman Empire. This includes a vast collection of coins/seals procured from the Capellini family—widely regarded as the biggest collection of historic seals across the world. This museum is located within San Giorgio Castle (via Curtatone 9).
