Getting There in La Spezia
Edit ThisLa Spezia getting there is best accomplished by rail. While it is more fashionable to enter the city through its famous port, the trains are more reliable in poor weather and tend to be more comfortable in the winter months.
Air
The nearest airport is Galileo Galelei Airport in Pisa, 66 kilometers away. There is a rail station at the airport, and you will need to change trains at the Pisa Centrale station. Travel times are between 1 and 2 hours depending on connections.
Car
La Spezia lies on the A15, which connects to the A12 highway between Genoa and Viareggio. It is approximately 45 minutes southeast of Genoa and 20 minutes northwest of Viareggio.
Boat
Arguably the most unique way to get to La Spezia is by boat. There is a ferry to Portovenere that leaves at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. Return trips from Portovenere are at 11:45 am on Saturdays and holidays only, 2:45 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. Ticket prices are 4 euros one way to 7 euros round trip. Ferry service is also available to the Cinque Terre, ranging in price from 15 to 25 euros and depending on the time of day and the time of year. Service can be suspended or canceled during adverse weather conditions.
Bus
There is bus service to and from Portovenere. Take the 11P, which departs every half hour.
Train
The Italian rail network has trains from Rome to La Spezia approximately every hour and a half, and from Genoa every half hour.
