When to Go in Florence Province

Edit This
Florence is charming year-round but crowds, price variations and weather can make some times of the year more pleasant than others for visitors and locals alike.

Summer
Although it is the most popular time of year to visit Florence, the summer season is far from an ideal choice if you have flexibility in planning your travels. The city is crowded and you will find long lines at almost all attractions. The heat can be oppressive and the daytime temperature consistently rises above 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). The sun beats relentlessly on the charming paving stones and with buildings (albeit historical and lovely buildings) blocking breezes, the city streets soon reach sweltering. The summer months are considered the height of the “high season” and prices, particularly for lodging, can be significantly higher than they are at other times of the year.

Fall
Between late September and early December, temperatures range between 45 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit (7 and 27 degrees Celsius). The mornings and evenings are crisp and cool but the temperature during the day is usually quite pleasant. Rain is not unheard of but there are still plenty of sunny days. There are fewer tourists in the city than there are during the summer months and some of the region’s most popular delicacies (such as wine and truffles) are “in season” or harvested in the fall.

Winter
Mid-December through the end of February is considered “low-season” in Florence. Prices and the number of visitors fall accordingly. It snows occasionally in the city; snow is far more common in other parts of Tuscany. Dry, cold days are frequent and the temperature ranges between 30 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (0 and 5 degrees Celsius). The days are short during the winter months; the sun sets between 16:15 and 17:00 with the shortest day of the year on the Winter Solstice (December 21).

Spring
The spring months can be wet but can also be a lovely time to visit the city. April and May are the wettest months. Springtime temperatures fall between 43 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit (6 and 23 degrees Celsius). Crowds increase around the Easter holidays and groups of schoolchildren often tour the city at this time of year. Lodging and attraction admission prices generally begin to rise around the end of March.
