The cathedral of Monreale is one of the big attractions of the island. The mosaics in Byzantine style, dating from the 12th century are very impressive. The Canadian town of Montreal was named after this small sicilian tonw, because the founder fell in love with this very cathedral.

Monreale is just 8 kilometres from Palermo and you can come here by city bus. Spend one morning or afternoon here. When the weather is hot, you can get a superb ice cream across the street at the 'Sette Nanni' (seven dwarves). The fig icecream is one of the best.
