It is best known for its famous wine Marsala which was "discovered" in 1733 by the English trader John Woodhouse. The Saracens named this city "Marsala" which derives from the Arab "Marsa Allah" (Port of Allah). Marsala and the rest of Sicily have been part of many kingdoms....It is also well-known as the place where Garibaldi and the "picciotti" (thousands) landed here and started their campaign to overthrow Bourbon rule in Sicily and gradually form a "United Italy"
