Things to Do in Cagliari
Edit ThisSince this city is an important part of modern day Italy, as well as being under the rule of former empires, there are a lot of Cagliari things to do and see here. Whether you are interested in viewing the remains of castles inside the city or going out of the city to view the landscape, there are many attractions to enjoy.
Open-Aired Museums
Even though the Sardinian Archaeological Museum holds all kinds of arts and artifacts from the pre-classical era back to the prehistoric times, there is a lot more to be seen as well. The castle of St. Michele, which was a monastery in the twelfth century, is mostly in ruins today. Yet, there is enough left to determine what it was. There is also the fortress of St. Ignazio. This fortress was strategically placed so it could guard the city against invaders like the French during their invasion of the nineteenth century.
Day Trip to Nora
Take a 18 mile drive to the southwest of Cagliari, and you will come to the peninsula of Pula, on which the city of Nora is located. The city was first established by the Phoenicians and continued to grow through the Romans. What is so amazing about this place is that you can make out certain types of buildings that have been left behind. Yo can see baths, fan amphitheaters, temples and the foundations of some villas. Plus, there are some well kept pavements made of mosaics.
Festival of St. Efisio
This is a must-do activity if you are in the city during the first few days of May. This remarkable festival has been going on every year since 1656. The festival features one of the world's largest and intricate processions. It always has thousands of participants from all over the globe. The processionists are all dressed up in 16th and 17th century costumes. It is without a doubt a very dramatic and spiritual experience.
Poetta Beach
The distance from the city to this interesting beach is only 10 miles away, but it seems much farther. The reason is that you leave the hustle and bustle of the intense city behind. The sand and water here is perfect for a day in the sun. You could hardly find a more relaxing place to spend a day to unwind. With sun tubs, umbrellas and beachfront cafes, you have all that you need to make your stay here enjoyable.
Shopping
Shopping in Cagliari absolutely has to be near the top of your list when you come here. The city is right up there with the rest of Italy's major cities when it comes to beautiful jewelry and designer clothes. The gold filigree here is about the best in the country. The well known Via Roma is filled with specialty boutiques and shops, selling everything from books to evening wear. It is always possible to turn down a side street and find yourself in a shop getting the bargain of your life.
