Edit This
Cagliari is the lovely city of Sardinia, with many Cagliari sights to explore. Artistry and cultural heritage defines the city of Cagliari and its rich history. Walking around the city gives you the pleasure of discovering old churches and century-old amphitheaters, while enjoying the panoramic views of the surrounding city. While in Sardinia, visit the beautiful beach of Poetto, with beachside nightclubs and restaurants. Explore the city with a good pair of walking shoes.
Museo Archeologico Nazionale
This museum houses different artifacts left behind by an ancient civilization of Nuragici. Across the island, there are towers known as Nuraghes, which curious travelers love to explore. Carved statues made of bronze and other bronze items from 5000 BC are safely housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale.
Anfiteatro Romano
Walking on the alleys of the old district of Stampace, you can see the beautiful Anfiteatro Romano. This 2nd century made theater has survived centuries of damage, but some portions of the theater, like the broad arc, remain standing to give us a glimpse of how afternoons are spent here. The theater is part of a hillside rock, carved to perfection to give rise to a magnificent structure. You can walk around the ruins of the theater and imagine watching gladiator battles. During summer, they closed the theater to visitors to give way to concerts and open-air operas.
Basilica di San Saturnino
The Basilica di San Saturnino is one of the amazing Cagliari sights. This basilica is the execution place of a Christian martyr named Saturninus, the patron saint of the city. Excavations done in this place revealed a place for Christian worship as early as the 6th century, which makes it one of the oldest churches in the whole Sardinia. The excavated necropolis viewed through the glass walls in the nave is one of the activities you should not miss doing in the basilica. In 1662, a partial demolition done on the basilica produced materials used to build Cattedrale di Santa Maria. The Vittorini monks from Marseille were responsible for the reconstruction of the church, giving the basilica its authentic look today.
Castello
The medieval castle found on top of a hill offers tourists with the magnificent view of the Cagliari Gulf. Walking around the city walls, you will see the St. Pancras Tower and the famous Elephant Tower. These 13th century structures are made of white limestone. Climb to the top of the St. Pancras Tower for a stunning view of the city. When you are exploring the Roman amphitheatre, find a good spot to see the beautiful effect of the warm sunlight on the white walls of the Castello.
