Monopoli is a small port located at the end of the province of Bari. The history of the city began with the destruction of the ancient greek city of Egnathia by the ostrogoth king Totila (545 AD). The inhabitants of Egnathia founded a new "only city" (which is the meaning of the word Monopoli) which would be controlled in the following centuries by normans, byzantines and staufer. The city was also administered by venetian and spanish.
