Gravina has its name from the deep ravine bordering the town. In the sides of the ravine there are abandoned cave dwellings, similar to those found in Matera – but with fewer tourists. There is also a large cave church, San Michele dei Grotte. The town itself is interesting with narrow streets in the old town and baroque palaces.
