A city bordered by rivers, Bologna is also the capital of Emilia-Romagna located in the Pro Valley of Northern Italy. You'll find Bologna between the Pro River and the Apennine Mountains where the Reno and Savena Rivers come close to one another.
The city is well established consistently ranked as having one of the highest quality of living in Italy. In 2005 Bologna ranked 5th, then two years later it was ranked 12th. Notably, Bologna is also home to the Western world's oldest University. The University of Bologna was founded in 1088. Many famous car companies also call Bologna home. They include Lamborghini and Maserati.

Climate

Bologna is a humid subtropical climate meaning winters are typically mild and summers are very hot and humid. Due to the high humidity levels, fog is a common occurrence. The average daily temperatures in the summer range from highs in the low to mid 80's and lows in the mid 50's. The winter contrasts with daily highs in the mid 40's to lows in the low 30's. Heatwaves are common in the summer months. Snowfall is likely from December- February.

Transportation

Reaching the area by air will take you through the Guglielmo Marconi International Airport. More than 4 million people a year travel through this airport making it the 10th busiest in Italy.

Bologna serves as a central hub for the rail in northern Italy. Bologna Central Station has such a strong location that many consider it to be the most important hub in all of Italy. A second hub, San Donato, serves as Italy's largest station in both size and traffic. The high traffic volume through these two hubs contributes to Bologna's economy greatly.

Public bus lines are also available.

Notable Cuisine

As the name would imply, Bologna is the home to the original bologna sausage. Other meats popular in the region include salame, mortadella, and prosciutto.The pasta meat sauce Bolognese also acquired it's name from the city.
