Family Travel Ideas in Turin
Edit ThisTurin is the business center and culture capital of northern Italy, so Turin family travel options are extensive. The city is well known for its palaces, art galleries, piazza, restaurants, parks, castles, gardens, and more. There are many different architectural and art styles found throughout Turin. With so many different historical and cultural activities, the time will fly by, and everyone, including the kids, will be entertained. Below is a list of popular family-friendly activities in Turin.
See the Life and Works of the House of Savoy
The Royal Palace of Turin was the palace of the Savoy family, and shows evidence of French influence, as it was renovated by Madama Reale in the 17th century. This palace was originally the Bishops palace, as the two city gates could easily be monitored form this spot. This is the one spot where families can learn about the region’s history while viewing the gorgeous architecture and furnishings.
The Best Egyptian Museum
A very exciting museum that is popular for families (in fact, you will have to drag the kids away from it!) is the Museo Egizio, which has the largest collection of Egyptian antiquities outside of the museum in Cairo. The collection includes the temple of Tuthmosi II, the Kings Assembly, several mummies, the Papyrus collection, the Table of Isis, Funerary paraphernalia from the Tomb of the Unknown, the Turin Royal Canon, and the Painted Tomb. Inside the museum you can view the three different versions of the Book of the Dead. One copy is the oldest surviving, another was the personal copy of the Architect Kha and the third is an illustrated copy.
The Old Roman Gate
The Palantine Towers are a roman structure that was one of the four city gates. These towers were the north gate found near the Palazzo Reale. Each tower has 16 sides, with a central gate between the towers. This was one of the few landmarks saved in the 18th century when the city went through urban reconstruction. Next to the towers is a portion of the old city wall.
A Famous Park on the River
The Parco del Valentine is the most famous of all parks in Turin. It is found along the banks of the Po River. At the center of the park is the Castello del Valentino, which currently houses the Faculty of Architecture for the Polytech of Turin. The fountain of strains was opened at the end of the 1800s, and is a large bath in rococo style that is surrounded by twelve different statues symbolizing the 12 months of the year. This is the perfect spot to let the kids run off some steam or enjoy an afternoon outdoors.
