Getting Around by Car
Having a car during your stay at Lago Maggiore is a great idea because it will allow you to visit nearby cities not only in ITaly but also in Switzerland. The A8 Autostrada dei Laghi is the main highway that you will use to get to another towns and cities. It is a good idea to apply for an international driver's permit before you leave for Italy, because this special permit will make the car rental process in Italy much smoother.
Getting Around by Train
Lago Maggiore has rail connections with Verbania, which is the nearest biggest train station south of Lago Maggiore. From Verbania you can travel to main cities such as Milan. The nearest biggest rail station north of Laggo Maggiore is in Bellinzona, Switzerland, which will allow you to visit cities in Switzerland. The Schengen visa stamp allows you travel within all of the member countries of the European Union so there's no need for an additional visa application.
Getting Around by Ferry
Ferry travel from Lago Maggiore is possible only to the Stressa Islands, which are Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori and Isola Madre. Ferry travel is only available during the summer and the boat schedule is set on a weekly basis. Also during the summer, there is available car ferry travel to Varenna, Bellagio, Cadenabio and Menaggio.
