7 Day Itinerary in Lago Maggiore
Edit ThisThis Lago Maggiore Itinerary is for anyone who loves enjoying their natural surroundings.
Anchoring the mountains that lead up to the Italian Alps, the magical Lake Maggiore is the heart of Italy's "Lakes District."
Day 1 – Piedmont
Your exploration may begin on the Piedmont side of this pre-alpine lake, in Arona. It’s worth taking the time to wander around this town, which contains numerous traces of the Borromeo family, including The Rocca Borromeo. Another striking sight is the 35-meter high bronze statue of San Carlo Borromeo, an Arona-born saint. You can also visit the Collegiate Church, or the 17th-century Church of the Madonna of Loreto.
Day 2 – Miena Town
Start the day with a journey to the enchanting town of Meina, where you'll find splendid aristocratic residences like the Neoclassical Villa Faraggiana. It’s worth stopping in the small village of Lesa to visit the 18th-ccentury Church of San Martino and the Manzoni Museum, the latter of which is housed within Villa Stampa. Pass through Villa Carlotta, and arrive in Stresa.
Days 3 and 4 – The Park of Villa Pallavicino
In the city of Stresa, visit the Park of Villa Pallavicino, a vast botanical and zoological garden full of aesthetic beauty. It covers an area of 20 hectares, and is a fantastic place to have a relaxing day. The park is also suitable for children, as they’ll love being able to see and touch the many species of plants and animals here. The park is equipped with several picnic areas as well as a playground, restaurant, and bar.
Day 5 – Stresa
Visit Stresa’s famous Liberty-style villas, many of which have been
transformed into luxury hotels. To see some of the finest work of the 17th-century Lombard School, go to the Church of Sant Ambrogio. Close by is
the Villa Ducale, where the International Centre of Rosmini Studies is headquartered.
Day 6 – Baveno Town
Make a point of visiting the lakeside town of Baveno, which has
stunning red granite caves. There’s a flight of steps from the road that leads to the lake. The Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio
features a Romanesque bell tower, baptistery and 18th-century portico.
Day 7 – The Lagoni di Mercurago
The park of Lagoni di Mercurago, located in the hills surrounding Arona near the small town of Mercurago, is a must-visit. With an area of about 500 hectares, there are plenty of species of wild animals, several varieties of local plants, and, of course, the typical aquatic flora of humid zones.
This Lago Maggiore itinerary is one unforgettable experience for the traveler who loves lakes, islands, ancient sites, wildlife, nature trails and breath-taking scenery.
