Salò was the headquarter of the government during the so called "Repubblica Sociale" in the period from the Italian armistice, 1943, till the end of the WWII, 1945. Each bulletin from the "Repubblica Sociale" government used to start with the formula "Salò informs", this is the reason why the republic was also called "Repubblica di Salò".

Salò is located on a charming gulf. The earthquake of 1901 destroyed most of the old buildings. Still, in the centre there are some historic buildings of interest as well as a few monuments.

The hilly hinterland is great for hiking. Salò is part of the High Brescia Garda Park, which extends up to Limone, comprising an area of 38,000 hectares.
