Sights in Como
Edit ThisBut the city of Como in itself is worth the while. It is a beautiful little town with a somewhat medieval appearance, with its narrow streets, fortress walls and Baradello Tower. Note the great gate Porta Torre in Piazza della Vittoria that was erected when Barbarossa rebuilt the city walls in 1192. The most striking landmarks are the three large churches: the 14th century Cathedral, and the Romanesque San Fedele and Sant'Abbondio.
Como is very proud of its great native scientist Alessandro Volta (1745 - 18..). The inventor of the battery ('the fundamental basis of all inventions', according to Albert Einstein) can be traced all trough town. From the house where he used to live in the street that bears his name, to the piazza Volta, the Liceo Classico A. Volta where he was a professor of experimental physics, and the Tempio Voltiana where all his instruments and apparatus are on display.
Como also has recurring temporary events like art and photography exhibitions, the Autunno Musicale in October and November, and different sailing regattas and boat races.
