Budget Travel Ideas in Bergamo

Edit This
Bergamo, in northern Italy, is an ideal location for the budget traveler to visit. It is close to Milan and many low cost airlines land at the nearby airport. From there one can take a bus to the city. The city is divided into 2 parts--the Citta Alta and the Citta Bassa--the old and the new cities.

Ride the Funicular

This is a tram-like vehicle that travels between the modern city and the old city for a low fee. The views from this ride are spectacular. Once you arrive at the old city, or the Città Alta, see the sights by walking around.

Main Attractions

The main attractions in the Citta Alta are the Piazza Vecchia that has Renaissance buildings such as the Biblioteca Civica (1594) and the Palazzo della Ragione (1199). The Piazza del Duomo, too, is a stone’s throw away and should be visited for its wonderful marble facade. Make sure you see the San Michele (13th century) and the Sant'Andrea churches. The Porta Sant'Agostino is the main gate, and was built in the 16th century to defend the city. The San Giacomo gate, too, is worth a visit.

There is no entry fee to the Museum of Natural Science where you get to see the giant mammoth and many other animals. Another museum that does not charge an entry fee is the Donizetti Museum. Here you can see the belongings and creations of the celebrated artist. In the vicinity is Donizetti’s home, a fine example of architecture of the 1800s. If you are a lover of art visit the Accademia Carrara (Piazza dell’ Academia). It has works by Botticelli, Raphael, Donatello, Pisanello, and others. Right next door is the Galleria d’Arte Moderna that features more contemporary exhibitions.

Take a funicular to San Vigilio. This is a small hilltop village that offers walks with spectacular views and it has a ruined castle. Entry to the castle, which is part of a public park, is free. Or take a funicular to the Upper Town and visit La Rocca castle. One can climb all the way to the top of the castle for more breathtaking vistas.
