Top 5 Must Do's in Ventimiglia

a modern region that developed after 1872 and an old region that dates
back to medieval times. The modern area is built over an ancient Roman
settlement and therefore the area has some some historical sites.
Hanbury Gardens
Hanbury Gardens are situated 6.5 km from Ventimiglia. The gardens boast an extensive botanical collection including plant species from 5 different continents. Located along the coast, the beautiful scenery offers the perfect background for the gardens. The gardens were started by Sir Thonas Hanbury in 1867. Hanbury Gardens is open every day from April until October. Opening times vary. There is an entry fee with discounted family tickets available.
Balzi Rossi
These cliff caves were home to prehistoric cultures dating back to 80,000 years ago. Many of the caves are open to visitors including Grotto del Cavglione. There have been many artifacts found in the caves including tools, bones, small fertility statues and cave paintings. These items help give more information on the development of human civilization. Some bones fragments found are 230, 000 years old. A modestly sized building houses Preistorico Museum which displays some of the artifacts and gives tourists more information on the area. Some of the caves were wrecked during World War II. This site is open Tuesday until Sunday. There is a small admission fee. Children and those over 65 enter for free.
Dolceacqua
Dolceacqu is located 9.5 km from Ventimiglia. This historical village has ruins that date back to the 16th century. You can see the ruins of a castle, houses and a bridge. The bridge was built during medieval times and it joins the 2 banks of the river.
New Town
This vibrant area is modern and offers a variety of tourist facilities. It was built over Roman ruins and it is worth visiting this area to see some of the historical sites. The ruins of a Roman theater date back to the 2nd century. When the theater was in use it could seat 5000 spectators. There are tombs near the theater.
Church of San Michele Arcangelo
This church was built during the 10th century and it shows remarkable craftsmanship in its design. The church was funded by the Counts of Ventimiglia and it was built over a pagan temple. In the 11th century the church was renovated and construction during this time is an example of Roman architecture. The church was damaged in 1628 by an earthquake.
