Chiavari is certainly to be considered among the oldest cities of Liguria for the majesty of its monuments, the quality of the medieval and baroque buildings and the multiplicity of its works of art. In the Medieval core we can find the church of San Giovanni Battista, rebuilt in 1624 by the architect Vannone and by Bartolomeo Bianco in its apsidal part. In the east side of the city, in Matteotti square, there is the church of San Francesco, rebuilt in 1630 by Francesco Bianco. In the omonimous square , we can find the church of Nostra Signora dell’Orto (1613-1633) , preceded by a classicized pronaos. Among the several private buildings, it’s worth mentioning the seventeenth century Maschio-Torriglia Palace, that is the seat of an important picture gallery and the Portici Neri Palace (13th century) in the Fenice square.
