Until 1180 Spotorno belonged to the Comitee of Noli and therefore to the Bishop of Savona. In 1228 the village and the castle, built on a little hill behind the inhabited area, were destroyed by the Nolese, allies of Genoa. Since 1385 it became part of the Republic of Genoa and chief town of the Jurisdiction of a Podestà.
