The sea in Riviera delle Palme
Edit This
The beaches of the Riviera Ligure delle Palme
boast a variety of shades and colors that make
them one of the principal motives for choosing
to spend your vacations on this stretch of the
coast. The sand of which they are composed is
among the finest in terms of the proportion of
quartz and silicates. The alternation of small
bays, long and broad stretches of sand and
pebble beaches allows even the most
demanding to find the ideal setting for their
days of relaxation. In some places, such as
Alassio, Loano and Finale, the sandy shore is
very wide, stretching as much as fifty meters
back from the sea, with a very shallow and
gently sloping bottom suitable for children or
those who are not expert swimmers. More
often the beach is broken up into narrow
bands that slope down from the hills or the
lush terraces above or spread out like fans at
the mouths of ancient and now vanished
streams, amidst dark rocks. Here you are more
likely to find deep water, to the delight and
satisfaction of those interested in sport.
Everywhere the sea is sparklingly clean, as
guaranteed by the many blue flags that have
been awarded to bathing resorts from Andora
to Laigueglia, Finale Ligure, Bergeggi and
Celle Ligure. This natural paradise for
vacations is supported by first-rate
accommodation and leisure facilities,
organized with complete respect for the
environment. With its 829 hotels, 101
residential complexes, 69 camp sites, 848
restaurants and 550 bathing establishments,
the Riviera delle Palme is able to meet any
requirement: indoor and open-air cinemas,
discotheques and night clubs in practically
every town; bars, pizzerias and ice-cream
parlors located almost everywhere, in the little
seaside villages or along the coast.

The Mar Ligure is a deep sea. Its bottom has a
fairly uneven topography and echoes that of
the typical Ligurian terrain, with its wealth of
valleys and mountain ranges. The rocky shore
extends along much of the coast and continues
underwater, often to a depth of over forty
meters, with sheer cliffs dropping straight into
the blue. These areas of rock are evenly
distributed throughout the Riviera Ligure delle
Palme. Indeed, it could be said that every
headland, every promontory, has its own
rocky bottom (Capo Mele, Isola Gallinara,
Capo Noli, Capo Vado) offering more..

Gallinara is a small island of quartzite,
covering an area of eleven hectares or twenty-seven
acres and located just under a kilometer
and a half or a mile from the coast, near
Albenga. The island reaches a maximum
height of 90 meters or 295 feet above sea
level. According to Cato and Varro, its name
derives from the wild fowl (gallina in Latin)
that used to live on the island in large
numbers. It has been used as a hermitage since
the late Roman era. Martin of Tours (c. 315-
97) lived there in a cave facing onto the sea.
