Formerly a possession of the marchesi di Clavesana, it was ceded to the republic of Genoa in 1393. In 1402 it passed to the marquisate of Finale and subsequently to the Del Carretto of Zuccarello. It came back under Genoese rule in 1581, though with its own statutes. The ring of walls, on a polygonal plan with two large towers, comprise the ruins of the castle.
