A commune in the Ligurian Alps, situated in the valley through which the river of the same name flows, it was once a possession of the bishops of Albenga. In 1385 Giustenice was ceded to Genoa by Pope Urban VI. Usurped by the Adorno in 1397, it came for a brief time under the rule of the Del Carretto before passing to the Doria (1470), with whom it shared the fortunes of the republic of Genoa. The parish church of San Michele, formerly the chapel of the nearby castle, of which only a few ruins are left standing, was rebuilt in the baroque era and houses fifteenth-century frescoes. The campanile of the church of San Lorenzo is also baroque. Alongside other activities, the typical agricultural products are fruit, olives and vegetables.
