of the Neva in the Ligurian Alps, it grew up on
the ancient Salt Road. A possession of the
marchesi di Clavesana since the twelfth
century, it was sold to the Savoy in 1623.
Subsequently acquired by the republic of
Genoa, it shared its fortunes. It was sacked by
Napoleon’s troops in 1796. The parish church
of Santa Caterina, opposite the oratory of San
Giovanni and flanked by a campanile built in
the late Middle Ages, is a simple building of the
baroque era. The parish church of San Martino
di Erli, from the eleventh century, houses
fifteenth-century frescoes. The extremely well-preserved
Borgo dei Bassi, on an elliptical plan,
is a significant example of a medieval settlement. The agriculture is typical of the
mountains. There are extensive chestnut woods
where mushrooms are collected.
